5 Aug 2025 Whale entanglement in Ocean By OUR CORRESPONDENT

South Sharqiyah The Environment Authority has responded to a tragic whale stranding incident on Al Ashkhara beach in the South Sharqiyah Governorate, where a whale was found dead due to suffocation caused by entanglement in a fishing net.

Initial assessments confirmed that the whale became trapped in abandoned fishing gear, a form of marine debris known to pose serious threats to marine life. The incident once again highlights the devastating impact of improperly discarded fishing equipment on ocean ecosystems.

The Environment Authority stressed the importance of environmental responsibility among fishermen and sea-goers, urging them to dispose of nets and fishing gear safely to prevent similar tragedies and protect marine biodiversity.

Efforts are ongoing across Oman to monitor and respond to cases of stranded marine animals. The Authority continues to implement awareness campaigns, conduct coastal inspections, and monitor marine habitats as part of its commitment to preserving the nation’s rich marine environment.
