Muscat – In a move to honour Oman’s rich history and its visionary leaders, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has issued Royal Directives to officially name several key national and main roads across the sultanate.

These roads, which are integral to the country’s infrastructure, will now bear the names of prominent figures from Oman’s past, connecting the nation’s modern development with its rich cultural and historical heritage.

Among the roads named under His Majesty’s directives is one linking the governorates of Muscat, Dakhliyah, Dhahirah and Buraimi, which will now be known as Sultan Thuwaini bin Said Road. This 388km road stretches from Burj al Sahwa roundabout in Muscat to the Hafeet border crossing in Buraimi.

Another key road, the 250km Sharqiyah Expressway from Bidbid to Sur Souq, will be named Sultan Turki bin Said Road.

Other notable roads include the Khasab-Lima-Dibba road in Musandam, which will be known as Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road, and the Batinah coastal road, currently under construction, which will have the name of Sultan Taimour bin Faisal Road.

The vital 857km Nizwa-Salalah road will be named Sultan Said bin Taimour Road, while the Muscat-Batinah Road will be named Sultan Qaboos Road, reflecting the legacy of the late sultan.

Saeed Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said the Royal Directives serve to strengthen the link between Oman’s rich history and its ongoing development. He noted that the naming of these roads not only honours the great leaders of Oman but also aligns with His Majesty the Sultan’s ongoing efforts to modernise the nation’s infrastructure.

Since the beginning of His Majesty’s reign, more than RO1.5bn has been invested in road construction and maintenance projects, underscoring the importance of connectivity in supporting Oman’s economic diversification and urban development. Completion of these projects will mark significant improvement in the country’s road network, supporting the ambitious goals of Oman Vision 2040.
