Salalah – As the khareef season departs from Dhofar, taking with it its cloudy skies and drizzles, the region is now embracing the vibrant ‘sarb’ or spring season, which officially began on September 21.

Although different in character, sarb – which continues until December 21 – is no less charming than khareef, offering its own unique appeal for locals and visitors alike.

After the rainy months of khareef, the people of Dhofar are looking forward to sarb, a time for outdoor gatherings under the sun’s warmth. The land, once drenched by the monsoon rain, is now blooming with flowers, and the streams coming to life, making this new season a perfect time to explore the governorate’s stunning natural beauty.

Dhofar governorate welcomed the astronomical spring season, or as it is locally called ‘Sarb’, which affects the coastal states of the governorate from Dhalkut in the west to Mirbat in the east.

A popular destination during sarb is Jabjat, a scenic area nestled within the Dhofar mountain range, located in the wilayat of Taqah. Known as the ‘Star of Spring’, Jabjat has become one of the most sought-after picnic spots, offering tranquility and breathtaking landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Camping is a favourite activity in Jabjat, with designated sites managed by local authorities to ensure environmental protection. Sheikh Tariq bin Khalid al Hinai, Wali of Taqah, explained, “With the rise in the number of visitors, we have introduced a camping permit system to regulate land use and protect the green spaces.”

He added that the area’s tranquility and natural beauty, combined with various activities on offer, make it an ideal family destination, particularly during the sarb season.

In recent years, Jabjat has seen significant development, with the government improving roads, lighting, and public facilities for the residents and visitors as well. Recreational areas have been set up for children, while local businesses, including shops selling traditional products, have added to the area’s charm. These efforts not only enhance the visitor experience but also boost the local economy.

The growing number of tourists has encouraged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to invest in the region. Mohammed bin Salem al Mahri, who runs a café in Jabjat, shared that sarb brings economic vitality to the area. “The climate during sarb transforms Jabjat into a major tourist hub, creating opportunities for businesses to thrive.”

Visitors, like Adel bin Ahmed Safrar, often associate sarb with Jabjat’s serene atmosphere. “The sarb season is just as spectacular as khareef, and Jabjat’s unique charm attracts people from across Dhofar, especially during moonlit weekends,” he remarked.

Another visitor, Muammar bin Awad al Omari, praised the efforts of local authorities in organising the camping areas and supporting small businesses. “This year’s arrangements, from cafés to family-run tents, have made Jabjat even more appealing,” he noted.

For the promotion of the sarb season, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism last week organised joint sessions of tourism partners from Oman and Saudi Arabia.
