21 Mar 2024 Muscat Expressway set for 12-lane expansion

Muscat – Muscat Municipality has taken a significant step towards easing traffic congestion with the launch of a major tender for the Muscat Expressway expansion project.

This project, which serves as the primary traffic artery of the capital, promises to have a positive impact on both individual commuters and the transportation of goods.

According to Ahmed bin Mohammed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, the expansion project marks a pivotal leap forward in improving connectivity across Muscat’s various regions and bolstering the capacity to accommodate the rapid growth of the transportation sector.

Al Humaidi underscored the project’s alignment with the nation’s broader urban and economic development goals, expressing confidence in its ability to advance the objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

The expansion project entails the addition of three lanes in each direction, resulting in a total of 12 lanes, making it the widest road in the Sultanate.

Beyond lane expansion, the project encompasses enhancements such as upgrading multi-level intersections, augmenting acceleration and deceleration lanes, and fortifying existing bridges.

Furthermore, it includes the implementation of water drainage channels, slope protection measures, floor paving, and the installation of concrete barriers and LED lighting systems for improved safety and sustainability.

The Muscat Expressway, inaugurated during the nation’s 40th National Day celebrations in 2010, represented a significant milestone in connecting residential and commercial hubs within Muscat while alleviating traffic congestion along Sultan Qaboos Road.

With the upcoming expansion, the expressway is poised to further elevate transportation efficiency and facilitate seamless connectivity, underscoring Muscat Municipality’s unwavering commitment to driving sustainable development and progress.
