Muscat- The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) on Sunday announced the results of its AI-powered Household Income and Expenditure Survey, describing the project as a national achievement and the first of its kind globally.

The project is aimed at enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of official statistics while keeping pace with modern global trends in statistical development.

Dr Khalifa bin Abdullah Al Barwani, CEO of the NCSI, said the project represents a qualitative shift in the production of official statistics in Oman.

“By employing artificial intelligence technologies, the project enhances the efficiency and sustainability of producing statistical indicators and improves the use of resources, while adhering to the highest standards of quality, accuracy and statistical reliability,” he said.

Al Barwani added that the transformation saves the time, effort and resources previously required by traditional methods. The project also supports economic policymaking and decision-making by providing comprehensive data on household consumption expenditure, its patterns and its relationship with demographic variables.

The survey provides the relative weights and importance of expenditure items needed to calculate the Consumer Price Index and measure inflation, in addition to accurate and comprehensive data on living conditions and information required for the System of National Accounts.

Halima bint Yousef Al-Wahaibiya, Director of the Population and Labour Force Statistics Department and Director of the AI-powered Household Income and Expenditure Survey Project at NCSI, presented the project’s key findings and outputs.

She said the results showed that the average monthly income of an Omani household reached RO1,839.3 in 2025, compared with RO1,552.6 in 2018, representing an 18.5% increase.

The average monthly income of an expatriate household reached RO717.2, compared with RO668.6 in 2018, an increase of 7.3%.

The overall average monthly household income stood at RO1,392.8, up 18.7% from RO1,173.7 in 2018.

On expenditure, the average total monthly spending by an Omani household reached RO1,058.8 in 2025, compared with RO931.4 in 2018, an increase of 13.7%.

Average monthly expenditure by an expatriate household reached RO402, compared with RO362 in 2018, representing an 11% increase.

The overall average monthly household expenditure rose to RO798, compared with RO687.5 in 2018, an increase of 15.9%.
