Doosan wins RO258mn contract for 1,700MW Misfah power project

Muscat – South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility has secured an approximately RO258mn contract to build the Misfah Combined Cycle Power Plant in Oman, strengthening its presence in the sultanate’s power generation sector.

Doosan Enerbility, a leading provider of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solutions and heavy equipment for the power and water sectors, said it had signed the contract with a consortium led by Nebras Power.

The contract is valued at around 930bn won, equivalent to approximately RO258mn, Doosan Enerbility said in a statement.

The consortium, led by Nebras Power and comprising Etihad Water and Electricity Company and Bahwan Infrastructure Services LLC, is developing the Misfah Combined Cycle Power Plant.

The latest award marks Doosan Enerbility’s second major contract in Oman within two months. The company recently secured an EPC contract worth approximately $350mn for the Duqm Combined Cycle Power Plant.

With a planned generation capacity of 1,700MW, the Misfah power plant will be located around 20km west of central Muscat and is scheduled for completion in April 2029. Once operational, the plant is expected to help meet Oman’s growing electricity demand while strengthening the reliability and stability of the country’s power supply.

“Our successful project execution and differentiated strategy in neighbouring Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar have led to this contract award,” said Hyeonho Lee, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Plant EPC Business Group.

“We will work with our partners to build a world-class power plant and contribute to stabilising electricity supply in Oman,” he added.

For the project, Doosan Enerbility has formed a consortium with SEPCO-3, a power plant construction company, to undertake the engineering, procurement and construction of the facility. Doosan Enerbility will also directly supply the plant’s key equipment, including steam turbines and generators.

In a separate statement, SEPCO-3 confirmed the signing of the EPC contract, describing it as another significant milestone in its expansion in Oman’s high-end power engineering market.

“The successful signing of the project represents another important achievement in SEPCO-3’s continued development of the Oman and broader Middle East high-end power markets, further strengthening its market position and brand influence in the large-scale gas-fired power generation sector,” the company said.

The Misfah power project is among the large-scale gas-fired power generation projects being developed to strengthen Oman’s electricity infrastructure. It is designed to provide efficient gas-fired generation capacity as well as flexible peak-shaving capability as the country integrates more renewable energy into its power mix.

The project is also expected to support stable grid operations and meet rising electricity demand associated with Oman’s economic and industrial development.

Together with the Duqm Combined Cycle Power Plant project, Misfah will utilise advanced combined-cycle technology designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions compared with conventional gas-fired generation.

The plants are also being designed to allow for the future integration of carbon capture systems, supporting greater generation efficiency and resource sustainability as Oman progresses towards a lower-emissions energy system.
