Muscat – Public Prosecution has issued a formal warning regarding the digital alteration or manipulation of another person’s audio, video, or images.

According to Article 36, Paragraph 6 of the law on Combating Cybercrimes, issued by Royal Decree No. 61/2026, any tampering with media content with the intent to defame, insult, or portray individuals in a manner that harms their honour or dignity constitutes a serious criminal offence.

Perpetrators face strict legal penalties, which include imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to RO 5,000, or either of these punishments. Authorities stress that even small changes to digital content can severely distort reality and result in major legal violations.
