Muscat – The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has opened a specialised medical laboratory testing facility to assess athletes before they enter training programmes or competitions.

Operated by the Department of Medicine and Sports Sciences, the laboratory will provide health screening under the Medical Testing Programme for Athletes, with a focus on prevention, early diagnosis and reducing risks linked to sporting activity.

The facility will initially serve promising and elite athletes before expanding its services to all competitors registered with sports federations and committees across Oman.

The ministry said the laboratory would help standardise medical screening procedures and improve the quality of healthcare and follow-up services available to athletes.

Each assessment begins with a detailed medical history, followed by checks of blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight and body mass index.

A doctor then conducts a clinical examination and electrocardiogram, before comprehensive laboratory tests are performed to determine the athlete’s health status and medical fitness.

Nursing staff receive athletes, record their medical histories and conduct initial vital measurements. Laboratory technicians collect blood samples and perform tests under approved professional procedures to ensure accurate and timely results.

The ministry said the integrated process would support the early detection of conditions that could affect performance or place athletes at risk during training and competition. Bringing clinical examinations, cardiac assessments and laboratory testing together at one location is also expected to reduce the time and effort required to complete medical checks.

The opening forms part of efforts to develop sports medicine services, strengthen preventive care and establish a more consistent medical monitoring system for athletes. The laboratory is expected to support federations and coaching teams by providing clearer health assessments while helping athletes participate safely in competitive sport.
