Muscat – The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) has launched a public awareness campaign urging hikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts to prepare carefully before heading into mountainous and remote areas, stressing that proper planning can significantly reduce risks during emergencies.

In guidance issued through its official social media platforms, the authority advised members of the public to use licensed adventure tourism companies and certified guides when undertaking hiking and wilderness trips.

The CDAA said licensed guides are trained to assess risks, respond to emergencies and help ensure trips are conducted safely. It added that adventure tourism companies operate within an approved legal framework designed to protect both visitors and service providers.

The authority also urged hikers to remain on designated trails, inform family or friends of their planned route before departure and carry essential safety equipment and reliable means of communication.

If a person becomes lost, the CDAA advises remaining where they are whenever possible, contacting the relevant authorities or the trip guide, and avoiding random movement that could make rescue efforts more difficult.

It also reminded the public that responsible adventure activities begin with careful planning and should end with the safe return of all participants.

For emergencies, the authority urged people to call 9999 or use the Nidaa mobile application to request assistance and share their location with emergency responders.

The awareness campaign forms part of the National Risk Register’s efforts to promote preparedness and improve public safety as outdoor tourism and adventure activities continue to grow across the sultanate.
