Muscat – From the rugged peaks of Nepal to the mountain trails of Oman, H E Dornath Aryal reflects on four transformative years as Ambassador of Nepal to the sultanate, where he leaves behind a legacy of strengthened diplomatic relations, key labour reforms and lasting personal connections.

Among the most significant achievements of his tenure was the unprecedented momentum in Nepal-Oman relations. The period witnessed the first-ever official visit of Oman’s Foreign Minister to Nepal in August 2024, the first meeting of Nepal-Oman Bilateral Consultation Mechanism held at the Foreign Secretary level in Muscat, the visit of Nepal’s Foreign Minister to Oman and a high-level Omani delegation travelling to Nepal to finalise pending memoranda of understanding.

Another milestone was the introduction of overseas labour permit services for Nepali workers. Following sustained efforts by the embassy, Nepal introduced a system allowing legally employed Nepali workers abroad to obtain labour approval without returning home. The initiative was launched for the first time in Salalah, making the process more accessible and convenient.

H E Aryal also spearheaded several digital reforms at the embassy, including a Digital Citizen Charter, electronic attendance, automated communication systems, online payment facilities and an innovative application that streamlines demand letter generation. Additionally, the embassy established its first E-Museum, digitally preserving historical records, agreements, official visits and important documents.

Beyond diplomacy, the ambassador promoted Nepal’s cultural heritage by organising annual celebrations of Buddha Jayanti and the International Day of Vesak, helping raise international awareness of Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

Reflecting on his stay, H E Aryal said, “These four years have been among the most rewarding of my diplomatic career. We have strengthened bilateral relations, modernised embassy services and created initiatives that will continue to benefit our citizens long after my departure.”

He added, “One of my fondest memories is hiking across Oman’s magnificent mountains. I explored more than 15 trekking routes, and I found a beautiful connection between Oman and Nepal – both countries share a deep love for mountains and nature. I will also cherish the warmth of Omani hospitality and the unforgettable taste of shuwa during Eid. Oman will always hold a special place in my heart.”
