Salalah – The Ministry of Health (MoH) has advised people with asthma to take extra precautions during the khareef season in Dhofar, as changing weather conditions, high humidity and dense fog can increase the likelihood of asthma attacks in susceptible individuals.

In a public awareness campaign, the ministry stressed that while the cool climate attracts thousands of visitors to Salalah and surrounding areas each year, environmental factors such as mist, damp air, pollen, dust and mould can trigger breathing difficulties for asthma patients if preventive measures are not followed.

The ministry urged individuals with asthma to always carry their reliever inhaler and avoid leaving home without it. Patients were also advised to continue taking their prescribed preventive medications regularly, even if symptoms appear to improve, as stopping treatment without medical advice can increase the risk of severe attacks.

People who are sensitive to fog, dust or pollen are encouraged to wear a protective face mask when outdoors, particularly in areas where these triggers are present. The ministry also recommended avoiding crowded or excessively damp locations if they are known to worsen asthma symptoms.

Maintaining adequate hydration is another important measure, with the ministry advising visitors to drink sufficient fluids throughout the day to support overall respiratory health.

The awareness message also reminds asthma patients to seek immediate medical attention if they experience worsening shortness of breath or if their symptoms do not improve after using their inhaler. Early medical intervention can help prevent complications and reduce the severity of an asthma attack.

The campaign forms part of the Ministry of Health’s seasonal health awareness initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and tourists visiting Dhofar during the annual khareef season. With large numbers of visitors expected over the coming weeks, health authorities continue to encourage the public to follow preventive advice and remain prepared for changing weather conditions while enjoying the region’s unique natural environment.
