Charge the nation, drive the transition

5 Jul 2026 Oman EV charging infrastructure By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – While the shift to electric vehicles is gaining momentum, the infrastructure on the ground is facing a reality check from everyday users. From long-distance travel hurdles to the stark contrast between Muscat and the interiors, the challenges with the current charging network need to be addressed to build a truly reliable EV ecosystem. Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

Yasir Khamis Yasir Al Gharibi, COO

Finding a working EV charger is consistently difficult, as most are slow or out of service. Oman simply isn’t ready for widespread EV adoption yet. However, with targeted infrastructure and grid investments over the next five years, we can build a reliable ecosystem capable of supporting the transition.

Raad bin Abdullah bin Zaher Al Ishaqi, Delivery driver

The availability of EV charging stations in Muscat but their complete absence in malls and public facilities of Nizwa reflects a clear developmental gap. This lack of infrastructure has discouraged our transition to clean energy, forcing residents to rely solely on home charging or to opt for hybrid vehicles instead.

Hussam Ahmed Ibrahim Al Nabhani, Student

Yes, sometimes it is difficult to find an available or functioning charging station, especially during peak hours or when travelling long distances. I believe the current EV charging infrastructure is continuously improving, but it still requires more charging stations, better maintenance and greater reliability, particularly in remote areas. Increasing the number of fast chargers and introducing a unified payment system would make the EV experience much easier and more convenient.

Mohammed Abdullah Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, IT professional

I sometimes face long-distance travel challenges due to scarce stations, overcrowding and slow charging, making home charging currently best. However, the ongoing infrastructure expansion reflects great progress for EV growth. To ensure a seamless experience, I highly recommend increasing charging station and activating more fast-charging technologies.

Rabiaa Ahmed Rabiaa Al Kindi, Hospitality industry professional

I don’t have an issue since we have an EV charger at home, but without one it’s very difficult since there are few charging stations, are far apart or in bad locations. We need more charging stations that are easily located around towns since people are now transitioning to EVs. Imagine if you came from far away and didn’t know where to find a charging station – that would be a big problem for you.

Ahmed Mohammed Yasser Al Gaharibi, Nurse

I have had difficulty finding an available EV charger. The charging infrastructure is improving, but more fast chargers and better maintenance are still needed. Expanding charging stations, especially in remote areas, would make EVs more convenient for everyone.
