Muscat – Paragliding activities have been suspended across Oman until further notice, the Oman Air Sports Committee announced on Wednesday, following a fatal accident in Salalah that claimed the lives of an Omani man and his sister.
The committee said that, in coordination with relevant authorities, it had decided to suspend all forms of paragliding at every licensed site in Oman until further notice.
The directive comes after Capt Ahmed bin Hamdan Al Kalbani and his sister died in a paragliding accident in Dhofar. The Oman Air Sports Committee issued a separate statement mourning the two following what it described as a tragic accident in Salalah.
The committee has not publicly stated that the suspension was directly prompted by the accident, nor provided details on how long the restrictions will remain in place.
Reports of the accident emerged on Tuesday, with social media accounts identifying the victims and saying the incident involved a paraglider in Dhofar.
No official details on the circumstances or cause of the fatal accident were released.
The suspension comes during the peak khareef tourism season, when paragliding and other adventure activities attract visitors to the governorate.
Just days earlier, the Oman Air Sports Committee had organised the week-long Air Sports Village in Dhofar in cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. The event, which concluded on August 17, featured paragliding, kite flying and drone demonstrations.
