USA – NASA has announced the discovery of two new giant planets, designated TOI-791 b and TOI-791 c, which are classified among the lowest-density planets identified to date. These planets orbit a sun-like star located approximately 1,113 light-years from Earth.
Observations made by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) over a 1,122-day period allowed scientists to monitor the planets’ transits and analyse their physical characteristics. Data reveals that TOI-791 b is similar in size to Jupiter but possesses only 3 per cent of its mass, while TOI-791 c exceeds Jupiter in size with only 5.9 per cent of its mass.
Scientists utilised mutual gravitational interactions between the planets to calculate their masses accurately. This research is expected to enhance understanding of giant planet formation, planetary system evolution, and the atmospheric composition of low-density celestial bodies.
