EA document return of Loggerhead Turtle after 12 years in Masirah

21 Jun 2026 EA document return of Loggerhead Turtle after 12 years in Masirah By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Masirah – Environment Authority (EA) in Masirah, have successfully documented a Loggerhead turtle during regular field monitoring operations on the Sur Ayjah beach. Ghasi Hamed Al Farsi, an environmental control supervisor at the centre, stated that the turtle was originally tagged twelve years ago during the 2014 nesting season at the same location. This discovery serves as a significant addition to the documented records of sea turtles returning to the shores of Masirah.

Al Farsi explained that the return of this female turtle reaffirms established scientific understanding regarding the behaviour of this species. Loggerhead turtles exhibit a strong attachment to their native nesting sites, a phenomenon known as site fidelity. Furthermore, the observation confirms that the female remains in an active reproductive state despite more than a decade passing since its initial tagging. This record has now been integrated into the field data for the 2026 nesting season and the long-term database maintained by the Environment Authority as part of its ongoing coastal management programme for Masirah Island.
