Chinese envoy urges diplomacy to resolve regional conflicts

10 May 2026 China highlights dialogue as key to stability at Muscat seminar By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – The Embassy of China in Oman hosted a seminar on Sunday titled ‘Adherence to the Principle of Resolving Disputes through Political and Diplomatic Means’, underscoring dialogue as the primary path to addressing international crises.

Diplomats, academics and policy observers attended the event, which examined the role of political engagement in easing tensions and strengthening cooperation among nations.

H E Lyu Jian, Ambassador of China to Oman, said Beijing views dialogue and consultation as the most effective tools for resolving disputes. He reaffirmed China’s support for efforts aimed at promoting peace, security and shared development.

“The world today is undergoing profound upheaval, marked by a notable rise in destabilising and uncertain factors, with conflicts erupting frequently in various regions,” he said. Referring to the Middle East, he added, “The ongoing war in the Middle East has now lasted for some time, taking its toll on the Gulf region and sending shockwaves across the globe. This is a war that should never have been fought, as it serves no one’s interests.”

He noted that the military strikes against Iran cut short the diplomatic track pursued by H E Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, in mediating Iran-US talks. “The conflict so far has resulted in immense casualties and economic losses, while its spillover effects have jeopardised the security of vital energy shipping lanes and weighed heavily on the global economy and energy supply,” he said, describing the situation as fragile.

H E Jian said China’s approach rests on peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law and linking development with security to achieve long-term stability.

He also noted that Oman and China share similar diplomatic principles, pointing to the sultanate’s policy of maintaining balanced relations and supporting regional and international peace.

Participants at the seminar discussed challenges facing diplomacy amid shifting global dynamics and called for stronger international coordination to safeguard food, energy and maritime security. They stressed that respect for international law and state sovereignty remain central to resolving disputes and preventing further escalation.
