Manchester – Omani athletes delivered a commendable performance at the British Taekwondo International Open held in Manchester from April 25–26, securing three bronze medals against strong global competition.
The event, organised in collaboration with Manchester City Council, Manchester Active and GB Taekwondo, drew more than 800 male and female athletes from across the world, underscoring its status as a key fixture on the international taekwondo calendar.
Speaking to Muscat Daily from Manchester, Oman’s national taekwondo athlete Nibras bin Mohammed Al Touqi, who clinched bronze in the under-54kg senior G1 category, described the achievement as a significant milestone in his career. “I am proud of this result, which motivates me to work even harder,” he said, noting that the G1-ranked event carries valuable world ranking points that boost qualification prospects for major competitions.
Al Touqi added that the Omani tally was further strengthened by Fedaa Al Barwani, who secured bronze in the under-55kg junior E1 category, and Nawaf Al Aufi, who finished third in the under-37kg cadet E1 division.
Currently competing professionally with Saudi club Al Hariq, Al Touqi said his international exposure reflects growing confidence in Omani talent. “This professional experience shows the trust foreign clubs place in my technical ability and my capacity to represent Oman honourably,” he said.
He added that the competition was highly demanding, requiring extensive physical and mental preparation. “International tournaments demand intensive training both inside and outside the gym, as well as strong mental readiness,” he noted.
Al Touqi confirmed that he is focused on a long-term training programme targeting qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics. “My goal is to reach the ranking needed to represent Oman at the Olympics and compete on the world’s biggest stage,” he said, expressing hope of participating in more international events to gain experience and improve rankings.
