Muscat – Sultan Qaboos University will conduct a forum titled ‘Towards an Inclusive University: Prospects for the Admission of Students with Hearing Impairments to Higher Education Institutions’ on April 26 in cooperation with the Omani Association for People with Hearing Disabilities.

The forum will coincide with Arab Deaf Week, reflecting national efforts to promote inclusive education and reinforce the principles of equity and equal opportunities within higher education institutions.

The event aims to raise awareness within both the academic community and wider society on the right of students with hearing impairments to access higher education. It will provide a platform for scientific dialogue, bringing together policymakers, academics, specialists, civil society organisations and students themselves.

Participants will discuss the current reality of university admission policies, the challenges associated with making higher education accessible for students with hearing impairments, and the importance of developing supportive learning environments that enable them to pursue academic opportunities.

The forum will also review best practices in inclusive education at both local and international levels, highlighting successful experiences and innovative approaches that contribute to integrating students with disabilities into university life.

A key theme of the forum is the role of art education as an effective pathway for empowerment and inclusive learning. Discussions will highlight how artistic disciplines can provide alternative channels for expression and learning, helping students with hearing impairments enhance their academic and social participation.

In addition, the event will present field experiences and inspiring success stories of students with hearing impairments who have successfully pursued higher education, reflecting their capabilities and the potential for greater academic and societal integration when appropriate support systems are in place.

The programme will include scientific papers, specialised training workshops and presentations showcasing pioneering initiatives and successful models in inclusive education.

Organisers say the forum also highlights the importance of institutional partnerships between universities and civil society organisations in advancing inclusive education policies. These collaborations contribute to improving support services for students with hearing impairments, including the provision of sign language interpreters and other accessibility resources.

By encouraging dialogue and knowledge exchange among stakeholders, the forum seeks to support the development of more inclusive admission policies and create a university environment that is more accessible, equitable and welcoming for all students.
