Muscat – More than 23,000 beneficiaries received social assistance worth over RO17mn in 2025, according to figures released by the Ministry of Social Development.
The assistance included cash and in-kind support, emergency aid and special relief provided to families affected by various circumstances, reflecting the government’s continued efforts to strengthen social protection programmes across the sultanate.
Officials said the programmes aim to support low-income families, promote community solidarity and enhance opportunities for economic empowerment.
As part of these efforts, 82 job opportunities were provided for children of low-income families, helping them secure stable employment and improve their livelihoods. In addition, 108 individuals were supported to establish home-based businesses, with financial assistance exceeding RO55,000.
The ministry said such initiatives are designed to encourage self-reliance and enable beneficiaries to develop sustainable sources of income.
In another initiative focusing on elderly welfare, 73 Omani families hosted elderly citizens under the ‘Alternative Families’ programme during 2025. The programme allows senior citizens to live within family environments that provide care, companionship and social support.
Officials noted that the initiative reflects the strong values of compassion and solidarity within Omani society. The programme operates under a regulatory framework approved through the Alternative Families for Elderly Care regulation issued in 2024, building on social welfare efforts that began in 2011.
The ministry said these programmes form part of broader efforts to strengthen community care systems and ensure that vulnerable groups receive the support needed to live with dignity and stability.
