Salalah – Oman and Yemen on Sunday signed two joint cooperation agreements in Salalah for an electrical interconnection project linking the power grids of Dhofar governorate and Yemen’s Al Mahrah Governorate.

The agreements aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the electricity sector and support the stability and availability of power supplies in several areas of Al Mahrah.

The first agreement was signed for Oman by Ali bin Issa Shamas, CEO of Namaa Dhofar Services, and for Yemen by Othman Mohammed Awadh, Director General of the Public Electricity Corporation in Al Mahrah Governorate.

The second agreement was signed for Oman by Ahmed bin Salem Al Abri, CEO of Namaa Power and Water Procurement, and for Yemen by Mohsen Ali Muhammad Balhaf, Director General of Yemen Petroleum Company in Al Mahrah Governorate.

Under the project’s first phase, electricity from Dhofar’s power grid will be supplied to Hawf (3MW) and Shahn (5MW).

The second phase will extend the interconnection to Al Ghaydah, the capital of Al Mahrah, with a capacity of up to 50MW.

The project is part of efforts to enhance cooperation in electrical energy and improve the reliability and availability of electricity supply in areas of Al Mahrah through their connection to the Dhofar power grid.

The interconnection project is expected to strengthen energy infrastructure, meet electricity needs in the targeted areas and support social and commercial activities.

The agreements also reflect the close cooperation between Oman and Yemen and their efforts to develop practical partnerships in the energy sector that contribute to stability, development and improved services for communities in the region.
