Ibri – Work has begun on a two-year project to restore and develop the historic Harat Al Raml in Ibri, with the first phase covering around 30% of the site and introducing new tourism and visitor facilities.

The project aims to preserve the quarter’s architectural and heritage identity while giving the historic site a new role in supporting tourism and economic activity in Dhahirah governorate.

Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al Balushi, Chief Operating Officer of Al Dhahirah International Development and Investment Company, said the first phase will start with site preparation, restoration of the museum and internal pathways, and rehabilitation of commercial outlets, with up to 30 shops planned.

The phase will also include a traditional café and restaurant, two tourist lodges and panoramic seating areas overlooking the quarter. Al Qa’qa Mosque, located within the site, will also be restored, with a dedicated prayer area for women to be added.

Al Balushi said the project seeks to repurpose the historic quarter without compromising its authenticity or architectural character. Tourism-related activities and services will create opportunities for small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurs and members of the local community.

He said the development could strengthen Ibri and Dhahirah’s position as a tourism destination by linking the quarter with the governorate’s wider network of historical, archaeological and natural attractions.

“The project reflects an approach that combines heritage preservation with development,” Al Balushi said, adding that the upgraded site would offer visitors an experience showcasing the region’s architectural and cultural heritage while providing modern tourism and visitor services.

The development is also expected to generate greater economic opportunities around the heritage site and increase community participation in tourism-related activities.

Once completed, Harat Al Raml is expected to become an important heritage tourism attraction in Ibri, combining the preservation of Oman’s traditional built heritage with facilities designed to meet the needs of visitors.
