Tehran, Iran – Iran and Oman have held several rounds of technical talks on the Strait of Hormuz, focusing on principles and operational mechanisms to ensure the safe passage of shipping through the strategic waterway, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told reporters on Saturday that the discussions had made progress and that technical and political consultations between the two countries were continuing.

“On Friday and Saturday, several rounds of talks were held in Tehran between Iran and Oman at the level of deputy foreign ministers. During these meetings, the two sides exchanged views on common principles and operational mechanisms for managing the safe passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights of the two coastal states,” Baqaei said.

He described the discussions as fruitful, adding that the Omani delegation concluded its visit and departed Tehran on Saturday afternoon but consultations between the two sides would continue.

Responding to a question on the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei said there had been “no change in the status of navigation through the strait”.
