Muscat – Public transport users in Muscat and Salalah won’t be able to pay bus fares in cash starting August 1, as Mwasalat moves to a fully electronic payment system across its city bus services.
In a notice issued to passengers, Mwasalat announced that ticket fares on all public transport city buses operating in Muscat and Salalah will be accepted only through approved digital payment methods. The move is part of the company’s efforts to provide a faster and more convenient travel experience while accelerating the adoption of smart and seamless transport services.
According to Mwasalat, the transition to cashless payments is aimed at enhancing service efficiency, reducing boarding time and offering passengers a more streamlined and secure travel experience. The company said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to digital transformation and improving customer convenience across Oman’s public transportation network.
Passengers will be able to purchase tickets using approved electronic payment options, including bank cards and mobile payment services such as Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. Mwasalat urged commuters to familiarise themselves with the available payment methods ahead of the implementation date to ensure a smooth transition.
The company expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of passengers during the changeover period and reiterated its commitment to delivering more efficient and customer-centric services.
The decision marks another significant step in Oman’s ongoing digital transformation drive and aligns with wider national efforts to promote cashless transactions and smart mobility solutions. Similar electronic payment systems have been increasingly adopted across various sectors in the sultanate as government entities and service providers seek to enhance operational efficiency and improve customer experiences through digital innovation.
