Muscat – Oman’s highest peak will once again become a gateway to the stars as the 17th Family Astronomy Camp returns to Jabal Shams later this month, bringing together astronomy enthusiasts, families and photographers for an immersive outdoor experience.
Organised by the Oman Society of Astronomy and Space in collaboration with Jabal Shams Resort, the camp will be conducted in two groups, with the first scheduled for June 25–26 and the second for June 26–27.
Designed to foster public interest in astronomy and space sciences, the event combines scientific learning with adventure tourism in the spectacular setting of Jabal Shams, renowned for its clear night skies and minimal light pollution.
Participants will have the opportunity to observe celestial bodies through telescopes during guided stargazing sessions and attend astronomy-themed evening programmes and interactive discussions. The camp also includes a variety of activities aimed at making science accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

The programme features a night photography competition, recreational games, educational workshops and a rocket activity that introduces children to the principles of physics and space exploration through hands-on participation. Organisers have also planned souvenir gifts and special prize distributions for attendees.
By blending astronomy with family-oriented activities, the annual event seeks to inspire curiosity about the universe while encouraging greater appreciation of Oman’s natural environment and its potential for astro-tourism.
Held in the mountain landscape of Dakhiliyah governorate, the camp offers participants a rare chance to experience the night sky away from urban light pollution, making it one of the sultanate’s most distinctive science outreach initiatives.
The organisers expect strong participation from families, amateur astronomers and photography enthusiasts eager to enjoy a memorable weekend under the stars while expanding their knowledge of the cosmos.
