Muscat – National Ferries Company transported more than 250,000 passengers in 2025, averaging around 690 travellers a day, underlining the growing importance of maritime transport in linking the country’s coastal regions and islands.

According to the company’s latest statistics, its vessels also ferried more than 64,000 vehicles and over 27,000 tonnes of cargo during the year, supporting the movement of people, goods and commercial supplies across the sultanate.

The company operates a fleet of five passenger and vehicle ferries in addition to a cargo and landing vessel serving key domestic routes. The largest passenger ferry Jawharat Masirah, accommodates 154 passengers and 38 vehicles, while Al Hallaniyat, Hormuz and Souqrah each carry around 106 passengers and 12 vehicles. The Shannah ferry has capacity for 15 passengers and 38 vehicles. The cargo and landing ship, also called Al Hallaniyat, can transport 12 passengers, 30 vehicles and up to 48 containers.

The ferry network plays an important role in strengthening links between governorates and islands, supporting tourism and trade while ensuring reliable transport for residents and businesses. In addition to scheduled high-speed passenger services, the company provides cargo transport and logistical support for development projects and economic activities in different parts of the country. It also operates sightseeing cruises showcasing Oman’s coastal and marine landscapes.

Demand for ferry services rises significantly during peak travel periods, particularly the Musandam winter season between November and February, the summer holidays, and the camping and turtle nesting season in Masirah Island from April to October.

As part of its long-term expansion strategy, the company is upgrading several existing vessels and building a new passenger and vehicle ferry at Asyad Drydock. The projects are intended to increase operational capacity, improve service quality and enhance the travel experience for users.

The company also continues to contribute to local employment, with Omani nationals accounting for 97% of its workforce.
