CAA advances sustainable aviation industry through waste material utilisation

Muscat – Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) continues to implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability within the aviation sector. As the nation balances economic growth with ecological responsibility, the Authority has prioritised the adoption of clean technologies and sustainable aviation fuel as core components of the National Aviation Strategy 2040. This strategy serves to modernise regulatory frameworks, ensure environmental compliance, and promote innovative solutions that align with global standards for a low-carbon economy.

A central element of this initiative is the exploration of a domestic sustainable aviation fuel industry. Several companies in Oman are already exploring the production of sustainable aviation fuel using waste materials, organic resources, agricultural feedstocks, hydrogen, and captured carbon dioxide. To support this objective, the Authority established a national working group in 2024, involving government entities, airlines, research centres, and fuel manufacturers. This group is currently conducting studies to assess the viability and economic potential of developing a domestic supply chain for these sustainable fuels, ensuring readiness across national airports.

The commitment to sustainability extends to operational efficiencies and infrastructure management. Aviation stakeholders are actively updating fleets with more fuel-efficient aircraft and adopting internationally approved operational procedures, such as optimised landing and takeoff settings. Furthermore, advanced air traffic management systems are being utilised to improve airspace efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. Through the implementation of the CORSIA scheme and the continued monitoring of carbon emissions via rigorous inspection programmes, Oman is reinforcing its dedication to transparency and environmental governance.
