CPA denies hike in construction material prices following social media rumors

19 May 2026 CPA denies hike in construction material prices By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has issued a formal statement addressing recent information circulating on social media platforms regarding the pricing and inflation rates of construction materials in local markets. The authority clarified that the reported rates of increase are inaccurate and do not truly reflect the actual price levels monitored across the Sultanate.

According to official data provided by the authority, the rate of change in iron prices from February to May 2026 did not exceed 12%, whilst cement prices recorded an upward adjustment of 18%. The authority noted that local construction material prices may experience fluctuating increases from time to time due to shifting supply and demand dynamics, changing import and shipping costs, and varying raw material values influenced by regional economic conditions over limited periods.

In response to current conditions, the authority has intensified its regulatory inspection campaigns across various markets to prevent businesses from exploiting circumstances. These enforcement efforts have successfully resulted in the detection and booking of several violating establishments, with necessary legal procedures initiated against them in accordance with applicable regulations. Suppliers are strongly urged to remain transparent and compliant, whilst consumers are advised to verify all market data through official channels and reliable sources before dissemination.
