Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has confirmed that more than 53,000 heads of livestock are expected to arrive in Oman ahead of Eid Al Adha as part of efforts to ensure sufficient supply in local markets and stabilise prices during the festive season.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry said it is closely monitoring livestock availability and coordinating with import companies and relevant authorities to enhance supplies across the sultanate. The move comes amid growing demand for sheep and goats ahead of Eid Al Adha, traditionally one of the busiest periods for livestock trade in Oman.
According to the ministry, local markets have received around 194,400 heads of sheep and goats and 13,700 heads of cattle since the beginning of April. In addition, more than 53,000 heads of livestock are expected to arrive before Eid, further strengthening market availability and supporting consumer needs.
MAFWR stressed that it continues to monitor market activity and livestock prices to ensure stability and prevent unjustified price increases. It also affirmed that inspection teams are carrying out regular checks in livestock markets across various governorates to protect consumers and verify compliance with health and safety standards.
Officials noted that some exporting countries are currently facing logistical and shipping challenges linked to regional circumstances, which have contributed to limited export availability from certain suppliers. Despite these challenges, the ministry said coordinated efforts are ongoing to maintain adequate supplies in the domestic market during the Eid season.
MAFWR urged consumers to purchase livestock from approved markets and licensed traders, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring food security and market stability during religious and national occasions.
