France – French health authorities have ordered the isolation of more than 1,700 passengers and crew members aboard a cruise ship currently docked in Bordeaux. The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, was intercepted after a 90-year-old passenger died from a suspected case of norovirus. Officials report that approximately 50 other individuals on board have presented with symptoms consistent with the highly contagious stomach infection.
The ship, named the Ambition, was carrying 1,233 passengers, the majority of whom are citizens of Britain and Ireland. Before reaching the western French port on Tuesday, the vessel had visited several locations, including the Shetland Islands, Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest. It was originally scheduled to continue its journey toward Spain before the quarantine was implemented to prevent further transmission of the illness.
Norovirus is a primary cause of acute gastroenteritis, resulting in the inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is notoriously resilient and spreads rapidly in confined environments through contaminated food, water, or contact with infected surfaces. While the infection causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea, it is rarely life-threatening for healthy individuals. However, it can pose significant risks to young children and the elderly due to the danger of dehydration.
Medical experts have noted the distinct differences between norovirus and hantavirus, another pathogen that has recently caused concern in maritime settings. While norovirus is easily transmitted from person to person, hantavirus is a zoonotic disease typically carried by rodents. Humans generally contract hantavirus by inhaling dust contaminated with rodent droppings or saliva. Unlike the rapid person-to-person spread of norovirus, hantavirus outbreaks are rare and primarily occur through environmental exposure rather than social interaction.
Health officials in Bordeaux are currently monitoring those on board and implementing strict sanitation protocols. The ship remains under close supervision as authorities work to ensure the safety of the passengers before allowing the vessel to resume its itinerary.
