Muscat – The Public Prosecution has stepped up efforts to raise awareness on cybercrimes, warning that online blackmail and digital threats are punishable offences under the sultanate’s Cybercrime Law.

In an awareness campaign, the authority highlighted the dangers of using information technology and social media platforms to threaten or extort individuals, stressing that such acts carry strict legal penalties aimed at protecting privacy and maintaining public safety.

According to the Public Prosecution, threatening or blackmailing a person into carrying out or refraining from an act – even if the act itself is lawful – through the use of information networks or digital communication tools is considered a criminal offence under Article 18 of the Cybercrime Law.

The authority said offenders may face imprisonment of up to 30 days and a fine of up to RO3,000, or one of the two penalties. It added that the punishment becomes more severe if the offence involves accusations of committing a crime or matters affecting honour, dignity and reputation.

The awareness campaign is part of ongoing national efforts to combat cybercrime and promote responsible digital behaviour, particularly among young users of social media platforms and electronic communication applications.

The Public Prosecution urged the public to avoid sharing sensitive personal information, private photographs and confidential data online, warning that cybercriminals often exploit such material for extortion and intimidation purposes.

Legal and cybersecurity specialists noted that many online blackmail cases begin through fake accounts, suspicious electronic links or deceptive online relationships aimed at obtaining personal information or images from victims.

The authority also encouraged victims of cyber extortion not to give in to threats or demands and to report incidents immediately through official channels to ensure legal action is taken against offenders.

The Public Prosecution reaffirmed the importance of digital awareness, safe Internet practices and community cooperation in curbing cyber-related crimes and strengthening trust in Oman’s digital environment.
