Muscat  – In a renewed push to promote responsible digital behaviour, Public Prosecution has issued a public awareness message warning against the misuse of social media platforms, stressing that offences such as blackmail, defamation and the spread of rumours carry legal consequences under Omani law.

The advisory, released as part of the ongoing ‘Missing Link’ campaign, states that the use of social media or other communication channels to harm individuals or society – including students and school staff – constitutes a punishable offence. Authorities said such actions undermine social cohesion and violate ethical and legal standards governing public conduct.

According to the statement, offenders may face imprisonment of up to 30 days, a fine of RO3,000, or both. The penalties fall under Article 95, pursuant to Article 48/e of the School Education Law, reinforcing measures aimed at safeguarding the educational environment and wider society.

The campaign reflects growing concern over digital misuse, particularly among younger users, as social media becomes increasingly embedded in daily life. Officials urged the public to exercise caution and responsibility online, noting that freedom of expression must not come at the expense of others’ rights or reputations.
