Oman’s growth calls for better restroom infrastructure

3 May 2026 Public restroom infrastructure Oman By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Access to clean and well-maintained public restrooms is essential for hygiene, comfort and tourism, and reflects a  country’s commitment to quality public infrastructure. Do we need more public toilets in Oman? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

Hamad Al Balushi, Banker

Public restrooms are not a luxury; they are a necessity for dignity, hygiene and tourism. In Oman, we need more facilities at beaches, parks and busy souqs. Clean, accessible restrooms reflect how we value both residents and visitors, and these facilities significantly improve everyday life experiences across our cities.

Raghavan, Construction professional

With the temperature soaring and people hydrating themselves frequently to quench their thirst, restrooms are a primary requirement. These are most required in public walkways, beaches, highways at every 5km, bus depots, tourist destinations and hiking spots. Public toilets should be accessible by app or swipe, well maintained and functional at all times.

Kiran Choudhury, Homemaker

Restrooms are much required in Oman, especially in beaches and market places like Hamriyah and Ruwi. Parking areas in Qurum should have restrooms.

Sudeshna Majumdar, Teacher

Oman needs more public restrooms. Many elderly people and children – in particular – require easy access to these. However, the issue is not only about numbers – it also involves proper location, regular maintenance, cleanliness and thoughtful planning. Public restrooms are most needed in walkways, highways, tourist destinations and markets.

Muna Basheer Al Zadjali, Private sector employee

Yes, Oman needs more public restrooms, especially in busy areas like beaches, parks, markets and tourist sites. Clean and accessible facilities improve public health and comfort for residents and visitors. Expanding these in high-traffic locations would enhance the overall experience and reflect a more welcoming environment.

Fatma Al Harthy, Homemaker

As a mother, I feel the lack of public restrooms most during outings with children. Places like playgrounds, corniches and shopping districts urgently need more well-maintained facilities. It’s not just convenience – it’s about comfort, safety and making public spaces truly welcoming for families across Oman.

Salim Al Rashdi, Government employee

Oman is growing rapidly, and infrastructure must keep pace. Public restrooms are especially needed near tourist attractions, highways and public transport areas. Travellers often struggle to find clean facilities. Improving this would elevate Oman’s image globally and show thoughtful planning for both citizens and tourists.

Rajesh Kumar, Private sector employee

Having lived in Oman for years, I appreciate its cleanliness, but more public restrooms would make a big difference. Areas like construction zones, markets and highways need these the most. Workers and daily commuters deserve access to basic sanitation facilities that are clean, safe and easy to find.

Sobia Jawad, Resident

We do need more public restrooms in Oman, especially in high-traffic recreational areas. Facilities are particularly needed on beaches such as Shatti Al Qurum, Azaiba and Ghubra, where visitor numbers are high. While we appreciate the recent restroom installations at some waterfronts, it is also important to include small prayer spaces or mosque facilities near these public areas to support families and elderly visitors. Qantab Beach, in particular, needs proper facilities. Currently, the lack of restrooms and limited parking make access difficult, despite the natural beauty of the area. Improving these basic facilities would greatly enhance the experience for both residents and tourists while preserving the value of these public spaces.
