Norway – The Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced that 287 candidates have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, with U.S. President Donald Trump likely to be included on the confidential list. According to Reuters, the current shortlist consists of 208 individuals and 79 organisations, a figure that reflects significant renewal compared to previous years. Kristian Berg Harpviken, the secretary of the committee, noted that despite a global rise in conflicts, the award remains a vital recognition of efforts towards international stability. He stated that the Peace Prize has become even more important in the current global climate, where high-quality peace work is being carried out relentlessly.

While the official list of nominees remains a strictly guarded secret for fifty years, the leaders of Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have publicly declared that they nominated Donald Trump for this year’s prize. These nominations are considered valid as they were reportedly submitted before the January 31 deadline. Allies of the President have highlighted his role in brokering historic ceasefires and peace accords in various regions throughout 2025 as the basis for these submissions. Despite the lack of official confirmation from the committee, bookmakers currently rank the U.S. President as a leading contender for the prestigious honour.

The selection process is extensive, as thousands of eligible individuals worldwide, including heads of state and university professors, can propose candidates. Other names appearing on betting sites alongside Trump include Pope Leo and Yulia Navalnaya. The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled to be announced on October 9, followed by a formal award ceremony in Oslo on December 10. Last year’s prize was awarded to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado, who notably presented her own medal to President Trump earlier this year as a gesture of mutual respect.
