Spare parts crunch deepens as summer demand rises

Muscat – A shortage of spare parts is disrupting vehicle servicing in Muscat just as demand surges with the rise in temperature and summer heat.

Garages in the city report delays in securing radiators, air-conditioning components and other essentials, citing supply chain disruptions linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Mechanics say shipments have slowed and prices of key materials, including aluminium used in cooling systems, have increased.

“We are seeing more customers than usual, but getting spare parts has become difficult,” said Mohammad Arif, a mechanic in Wadi Kabir. “Radiators and AC components are in short supply, and prices have increased compared to last year.”

The supply strain comes as temperatures climb across Oman, prompting motorists to prepare vehicles for extreme heat. Workshops are handling a sharp rise in requests for radiator replacements, AC gas refills and window tinting.

According to reports, high temperatures have led to more cases of engine overheating and air-conditioning failures.

Mechanics say the seasonal rush has intensified due to concerns over breakdowns. “Earlier, customers came gradually before summer. Now many are coming at once,” said Shahid Khan, another mechanic in Wadi Kabir. “We serve around 35 cars a day, and the number is increasing. Delays happen mainly because parts are not readily available.”

Motorists say maintenance costs have edged up. Joseph MK, an Indian resident, said he opted for early servicing after his car broke down last summer. “Even then, I had to wait because of the rush,” he said. “Items such as wipers, AC gas and spark plugs have gone up.”

Spare parts dealers confirm procurement challenges. “In the past few weeks, sourcing materials from abroad has become difficult,” said Shiva K, a dealer of spare parts. “Prices of AC parts, brake components and spark plugs have increased. Customers try to negotiate, but our costs have also gone up.”

Some drivers are taking preventive steps. Salim Al Balushi, a businessman from Amerat, said regular checks are critical during summer. “The heat is getting worse each year. Checking the radiator, coolant levels and AC can prevent bigger problems,” he said.

With temperatures expected to remain high in the coming months, garages anticipate continued pressure from both rising demand and limited supplies, adding strain to motorists preparing for Oman’s summer conditions.
