Muscat – The Media, Tourism and Culture Committee of the Majlis A’Shura on Tuesday hosted representatives of the Omani Society for Writers and Literati as part of its review of a proposal to strengthen the role of community cultural centres and libraries.

The session, chaired by Abdullah Humaid Al Harthy, examined mechanisms to enhance the societal impact of cultural institutions and expand access to literary activities across Oman.

Al Harthy said the Shura reflects the voice of society and serves as a platform for raising cultural and intellectual issues. He stressed the need for closer coordination between official and community institutions to support the cultural sector.

Saeed Mohammed Al Saqlaawi, chairman of the society, outlined its programmes aimed at supporting writers and promoting literary activity. He highlighted initiatives including training workshops, literary competitions and collaboration with government and cultural institutions to broaden public engagement.

Al Saqlaawi noted that Omani writers, particularly in fiction and poetry, have gained recognition locally and across the Arab world. Their work has featured at book fairs and cultural forums and received regional and international awards.

He said the society supports emerging talent through publishing assistance, specialised training and platforms that connect writers with readers. Efforts are also under way to expand partnerships locally and internationally to strengthen the presence of Omani literature abroad.

Discussions addressed funding, infrastructure and legislative support needed to sustain cultural initiatives. Committee members raised challenges related to resources and institutional capacity and explored options for financial and technical assistance.

Participants also emphasised the importance of adapting to developments in cultural industries, including digital publishing and innovation in literary content.

Both sides underlined the role of community cultural centres and libraries as platforms for promoting reading and knowledge. The meeting concluded with a call for continued coordination to advance the cultural sector and reinforce its contribution to national development.
