Muscat – The Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (ASMED) has launched an initiative to support craftsmen and reinforce Oman’s traditional crafts sector in a move to consolidate its role in the national economy.

The Crafts Support Initiative will provide financial and technical assistance to individual artisans and craft enterprises, while improving production standards and supporting long-term sustainability. ASMED said the programme is part of ongoing efforts to preserve skills linked to Omani heritage and expand their commercial reach.

The initiative includes support for establishing and maintaining workshops, as well as assistance for marketing, packaging and participation in exhibitions. It also provides funding for machinery and raw materials, alongside training programmes aimed at improving efficiency and product quality.

ASMED said the initiative is open to licensed home-based craftsmen and registered craft enterprises operating in accordance with approved regulations. Applicants must be registered with the authority, hold valid licences for their activities and meet eligibility criteria, including not having received similar support in the past two years.

A detailed guide outlining the application process has been issued to facilitate accurate submissions.

The initiative covers a wide range of traditional activities, including the production of khanjars, silverwork, palm frond crafts, perfumes and incense, weaving, pottery, ceramics and leather goods.

ASMED data showed that participation in craft support programmes has grown steadily, with around 2,995 beneficiaries recorded between 2022 and 2025. Approved funding in this period exceeded RO3mn, reflecting sustained interest in the sector and continued institutional backing. Registration is available at eservices.sme.gov.om
