Muscat – Considering the fact that children’s literature plays a significant role in shaping young minds, academics and writers in Oman are calling for greater focus on quality content that supports intellectual and emotional development from an early age.

Specialists say children’s books have moved beyond simple storytelling to become a structured field that blends education with creativity, combining text and illustration to engage readers and encourage independent thinking.

Amer bin Mohammed Al Isri, Assistant Professor at Sultan Qaboos University, described children’s books as a key tool in building cultural awareness. He noted that well-crafted content helps develop language, imagination and knowledge, while enabling children to better understand their environment.

He said early investment in children’s culture has long-term benefits, placing responsibility on institutions to provide content that reflects identity and keeps pace with social change. A diverse mix of knowledge, arts and values, he added, helps prepare children to become active members of society.

According to novelist Amira bint Ali Al Balushi, the strength of a children’s book lies in how it is produced, not just in its idea. Careful attention to text, illustrations and design creates a lasting connection with young readers and enhances retention.

Experts also stressed the importance of encouraging curiosity rather than providing ready-made answers, noting that effective books help children question, reflect and explore.

Azza bint Hilal Al Shaibani, another novelist, described writing for children as a balance between cultural identity and imagination. She said successful works present heritage in ways that are relevant to modern readers, while drawing on universal themes that remain meaningful across generations.

Artist Maryam bint Ali Al Qamshou’i highlighted the importance of illustrations, saying images play a central role in storytelling and help children interpret meaning alongside text.

With the rise of digital media, writers say children’s books must develop stronger visual and narrative appeal to maintain their relevance.

Writer Ahmed bin Nasser Al Rashidi said selecting suitable topics requires an understanding of age groups and their linguistic and psychological needs. He added that strong integration between text and visuals is essential to a book’s success.

Experts agree that children’s literature serves as a key tool in shaping awareness, strengthening identity and developing critical thinking in a rapidly changing world.
