Muscat – A pilot research project is exploring the development of natural shrimp feed using locally sourced plant extracts with antibacterial properties, in a move aimed at strengthening sustainability in the sultanate’s aquaculture sector and reducing dependence on conventional antibiotics.

The project is being implemented by the Aquaculture Centre in cooperation with the Department of Biological Sciences and Chemistry at the University of Nizwa and Oman Aquarium, reflecting growing collaboration between research institutions and industry partners to support innovation in aquaculture.

Researchers involved in the initiative are studying the potential of natural bioactive compounds extracted from local plant resources in combating harmful bacteria that affect aquatic organisms. The focus is particularly on shrimp farming, which is regarded as one of the most promising segments within Oman’s expanding aquaculture industry.

The initiative seeks to develop an innovative feed formulation that can act as a natural alternative to antibiotic-based treatments commonly used in aquaculture. Reducing the use of antibiotics is expected to help address global concerns related to antimicrobial resistance, while improving the overall health and resilience of aquatic species.

As part of the project, scientists are testing a range of locally derived plant extracts to assess their antibacterial effectiveness and their impact on shrimp health, immunity and growth performance. The research also examines how these natural compounds can be efficiently incorporated into feed formulations used in shrimp farming.

In addition to laboratory studies, field trials are being carried out to evaluate the performance of the newly developed feed under real aquaculture farming conditions. These trials aim to identify the most effective nutritional combinations that balance disease prevention with optimal growth and productivity.

Experts say the development of natural and sustainable feed solutions represents an important step towards supporting the long-term growth of Oman’s aquaculture sector, while contributing to food security and promoting environmentally responsible farming practices in the sultanate.
