Haima – The Environment Authority in Al Wusta has launched a major ecological initiative to plant 2mn wild seeds in the Arabian Oryx Reserve as part of efforts to enhance vegetation cover, combat desertification and support biodiversity in one of the sultanate’s most important wildlife sanctuaries.

The initiative includes sowing native tree species such as sidr, ghaf, samr and qart, all of which are well adapted to the desert environment and play a crucial role in sustaining wildlife habitats.

Officials said the programme aims to increase plant cover across the reserve and rehabilitate natural ecosystems, supporting the sustainability of wildlife populations and aligning with the environmental priorities in Oman Vision 2040.

Located in the wilayat of Haima, the reserve is also emerging as a key destination for nature-based tourism. The reserve serves as a vital centre for wildlife conservation while also contributing to local economic development through sustainable tourism activities. Visitors are offered the opportunity to explore the reserve’s unique desert ecosystem and learn about conservation efforts aimed at protecting endangered species.

In parallel with the large-scale seed-planting programme, the reserve is undertaking additional environmental projects, including the planting of around 80,000 wild trees to further increase vegetation cover and restore natural habitats. Infrastructure improvements are also underway to enhance visitor facilities and support the growth of ecotourism.

Covering an area of about 2,824sqkm, the reserve hosts a diverse range of wildlife. It is home to around 900 Arabian Oryx, 1,240 sand gazelle and 160 Arabian gazelle.

Other species found in the reserve include the Nubian Ibex, sand fox, wild rabbits and honey badger, adding to the ecological richness of the area and enhancing the visitor experience.

Environmental officials say these initiatives reflect the sultanate’s commitment to protecting natural ecosystems, preserving endangered species and expanding sustainable tourism opportunities across the country.
