Australia – In a landmark decision for the Australian Defence Force, Defence Minister Richard Marles announced on Monday the appointment of Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as the new Chief of Army. This appointment is considered deeply historic, as it marks the first time a woman will command a service in the history of the Australian military since its founding 125 years ago. Minister Marles emphasised the significance of the moment, noting that such representation allows future generations to envision themselves in high-ranking leadership roles.
Lieutenant General Coyle brings over 30 years of extensive experience to the position, having served in various operations across the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. Her leadership comes at a time when the Australian Army is undergoing a significant transformation, modernising its capabilities with long-range firepower, drones, and advanced combat tools. Coyle expressed confidence in her new role, highlighting her background in cyber-warfare and modern military technology as a vital foundation for the responsibilities of command and the trust placed in her.
