Masirah – Specialists at the Environment Authority in Masirah, in South Sharqiyah, have documented two humpback whales in waters northeast of the island during ongoing field surveys and environmental monitoring operations.
The whales were observed actively feeding, highlighting the high biological value of the marine area, particularly within the designated Sector 1 zone.
Officials said the sighting forms part of the centre’s continuous efforts to monitor endangered marine species and document their natural behaviour in the waters surrounding the wilayat.
The northeastern waters of Masirah are considered an environmentally significant habitat due to their unique ecological characteristics. The area serves as a rich feeding ground not only for whales but also for sea turtles, making it an important hub for marine biodiversity.

Environmental experts note that the region supports a balanced marine ecosystem, with its open waters providing an essential habitat where marine species find abundant food sources that support their survival.
The site’s importance is further enhanced by its location along natural movement corridors for marine wildlife, where feeding activity is particularly concentrated. This makes sustained scientific monitoring and documentation crucial for conservation efforts.
Authorities said the latest observation will help strengthen the scientific database on the marine ecosystem in the area and underline the strategic importance of the waters around Masirah as a key feeding ground shared by whales and sea turtles.
