Muscat – A ceasefire was declared in the early hours of Wednesday after 40 days of conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, easing tensions that had fuelled anxiety and economic strain across the Middle East.

The truce has been welcomed by leaders worldwide. In Oman, residents and diplomats expressed relief while underscoring the need for long-term stability.

UK national Maggie Jeans highlighted the economic and security dimensions of peace, particularly for energy markets. “A lasting ceasefire will ensure safer oil routes and reduce the risk of further conflict,” she said.

Maggie added that strengthening Oman’s infrastructure – including airports, ports and regional connectivity through rail, road and pipeline links with the GCC – is essential to safeguard against future disruptions.

Rajan V Kokkuri, an Indian writer based in Oman, stressed the global reliance on Gulf oil and gas. He said conflicts in the region directly affect livelihoods worldwide and noted that GCC economies have borne huge costs during the hostilities. He called for mechanisms such as the ‘No First Use’ agreement to help lower tensions.

For many residents, the conflict had personal repercussions. Sayed Al Balushi, a businessman based in Amerat, said communication with contacts in Iran had been severely affected. “I used to travel to Iran frequently. I have several friends there and have not been able to reach them. I hope the ceasefire will help restore normalcy,” he said.

H E Syed Naveed Safdar Bokhari, Ambassador of Pakistan to Oman, described the ceasefire as a “major relief” for both the region and the wider international community. “Pakistan has consistently stood for peace and dialogue,” he said, adding that diplomatic engagement at this stage is critical to prevent further escalation.

As calm gradually returns, many in Oman hope the ceasefire will lead to sustained peace and renewed regional cooperation.
