Muscat – Oman and Japan have called for intensified international efforts to ensure free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that lasting maritime security depends on diplomacy and a political solution to regional tensions.
The position was outlined during talks in Muscat on Thursday between Foreign Minister H E Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi and Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who discussed regional developments, maritime security and efforts to prevent further escalation.
The two ministers stressed the importance of reaching a final agreement and political solution that could ease tensions, while ensuring the uninterrupted movement of ships and energy supplies through Hormuz.
H E Sayyid Badr said the security of the strait extended far beyond the Gulf. “Safe passage through the strait is inseparable from the security and prosperity of the wider region,” he said, noting that economies around the world depend on the energy and commodities transported through the waterway.
“Guaranteeing sustainable security in the Strait of Hormuz requires lasting peace in the region through restraint, diplomacy and sustained engagement to address the underlying causes of instability,” H E Sayyid Badr said.
He added that Oman remained determined to work with Japan and other international partners in support of “dialogue, justice and peaceful solutions”.
Motegi, meanwhile, said the situation surrounding Iran had reached a highly critical stage and called for candid discussions aimed at de-escalating tensions as soon as possible.
He said Japan would continue close coordination with Oman to ensure free and safe navigation through both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al Mandab.
Motegi reiterated the message in a social media post from Muscat, saying Hormuz, as an international strait, “must allow all vessels to navigate freely and safely, without being subjected to any additional burdens”.
He said Japan would continue to deepen cooperation with the Middle East, describing the region as vital to the country’s energy security.
The two ministers agreed on the importance of freedom and safety of navigation through vital waterways in accordance with international law to protect global trade and supply chains.
