Muscat – The Environment Authority (EA) launched a national digital platform called Manakh (Climate) on Wednesday to manage climate change data and report greenhouse gas emissions across the sultanate.

The platform was launched under the patronage of Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of EA. It aims to enhance climate data governance by enabling government entities and institutions to systematically collect, input and update emissions data and mitigation measures.

Officials said the platform will improve the quality and accuracy of national climate data while providing a unified system for tracking greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors.

The authority noted that the platform follows methodologies and guidelines adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United Nations, ensuring consistency and comparability of data in line with international standards.

Manakh incorporates recognised monitoring, reporting and verification mechanisms, allowing emissions data to be reviewed, verified and documented according to international best practices. ‘This will support the preparation of national and international climate reports,’ EA stated.

The platform also enables authorities to track progress towards national emissions reduction targets and measure the impact of mitigation measures.

In addition, it facilitates the preparation of climate-related reports and communications required under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, including Biennial Transparency Reportsand national greenhouse gas inventory reports.

The authority stated that the platform will support the goals of Vision 2040 and the National Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050 by providing an integrated national system for monitoring emissions and enhancing coordination among relevant entities.

Officials added that the platform boosts Oman’s efforts to address climate change while advancing sustainable development.
