Jabal Akhdar – More than 65% of the value-addition project for rose cultivation in Jabal Akhdar has been completed, with the initiative expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The RO150,000 project forms part of broader efforts to enhance the economic value of Oman’s renowned mountain roses and strengthen related industries.

The project is being implemented by the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. It includes preparing a specialised study to establish baseline data on rose cultivation in Jabal Akhdar and the industries linked to it, while also reinforcing partnerships with small and medium enterprises producing rose-based products in the area.

The initiative also seeks to expand local rose cultivation by adding around five acres of new plantations. It introduces agricultural mechanisation suited to the mountainous terrain and aims to improve farming practices by up to 50%, helping farmers increase productivity and crop quality.

As part of the programme, specialised training sessions are being organised for rural women on producing rose-based products such as soaps, lotions and cosmetics, creating additional income opportunities for local communities.

Hanan bint Said Al Salimi, Executive Director of the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund, said around 120 farmers in Jabal Akhdar are benefiting from the project. She noted that the initiative is expected to significantly enhance the plant’s economic value by improving both production quality and quantity, while also supporting the development of related industries, including rose water and cosmetics.

Hanan added that the project provides an integrated support package for farmers, including small manual tillers equipped with attachments suitable for the rugged terrain, rehabilitation of agricultural terraces, and the distribution of free rose seedlings to expand cultivation and boost productivity.

Support will also extend to SMEs involved in manufacturing and marketing rose products through the provision of specialised equipment for extracting rose oil and essence. The next phase of the project will focus on expanding rose-based industries, strengthening marketing and processing chains, and developing higher-quality rose-derived products to enhance competitiveness in local markets and potentially open export opportunities.
