Muscat – More than RO30mn has been allocated to relocate electricity lines from wadis and reinforce the national grid, according to the CEO of Namaa Electricity Distribution.

Alaa bin Hassan bin Moussa said the funding covers replacement of affected poles, grid strengthening works and development of new stations. The move follows directives from the Authority for Public Services Regulation to study networks located in wadi courses and redesign these to improve safety and reliability.

“All electrical lines located within wadis have been studied and are now in the design phase for reconstruction according to higher technical standards,” he said. “This will enhance network efficiency and durability against natural conditions.”

Among the key projects is the upgrade of the electricity network in Wadi Fida in Dhahirah. Some concrete poles are currently located in the wadi’s path, exposing these to flash flood risks.

“Despite the durability of these poles, their presence inside the wadi exposes them to the risks of flash floods. These will be replaced with iron poles to reduce the impact of heavy rain and maintain service continuity in affected areas.”

He added that strategic projects are also under way to diversify energy sources, with focus on renewable energy, particularly wind power.

These initiatives support the targets of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to raise the share of renewables to around 30% by 2030.

The overall project portfolio for the next phase is estimated at more than RO8bn, covering electricity, gas transmission, water and sanitation sectors.
