Muscat – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) recently held a media briefing to showcase the notable achievements of 2025 and establish the strategic direction for the current year. Oman’s extensive environmental and climatic diversity possesses 5.5mn acres of land either currently used for agriculture or suitable for reclamation. This significant area represents 7.5% of the country’s total landmass. Records from the end of 2024 indicate that total agricultural holdings cover 355,000 acres, with approximately 312,000 acres actively cultivated.
The national capacity for plant production is supported by a robust network of 26 research centres, stations, and nurseries, alongside 21 agricultural quarries and six specialised honeybee units. Livestock resources remain a vital pillar of the economy, with 3.2mn acres dedicated to natural pastures across the northern and southern regions, supporting a population of 4mn farm animals. In the maritime sector, Oman continues to leverage its vast and varied fish stocks. The infrastructure now includes 24 operational ports and numerous landing sites along the coast, supported by 62 fish markets, 1,220 marketing outlets, and 119 active fish processing factories.
Water resource management has also seen considerable investment, with 89 bottled water plants producing over 8,335 cubic metres daily. Furthermore, 92 major desalination plants contribute 455.36 million cubic metres of water, while 67 treatment plants generate 119.5mn cubic metres of processed water. To ensure the highest standards of consumption, the Sultanate maintains 35 food safety and quality laboratories, comprising 12 municipal facilities and 23 private laboratories.
