Muscat – The Sultanate of Oman has called for activating international accountability mechanisms, supporting judicial efforts and ensuring independent and transparent investigations to hold those responsible for violations in the occupied Palestinian territory since 1967 accountable.

The call came in a statement delivered by H E Idris bin Abdulrahman Al Khanjari, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The statement was made under Item 7 of the council’s agenda during the interactive dialogue on the report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory. Oman expressed deep concern over the findings of the report, highlighting the seriousness of the documented violations, including torture and inhumane treatment. The statement stressed that such practices constitute grave breaches of international law and require accountability under international humanitarian law as well as the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Al Khanjari noted that the continuation of such violations without accountability not only entrenches a culture of impunity but also poses a direct challenge to the credibility of the international system based on the rule of law.

The sultanate also reiterated its firm rejection of any practices that undermine the independence of international human rights mechanisms, stressing the importance of enabling UN experts to carry out their mandates freely, with dignity and effectiveness, in order to safeguard human rights and strengthen the rule of international law.
