Muscat – The Environment Authority (EA) has launched a new monitoring project at the Ras al Hadd Turtle Reserve in South Sharqiyah to scientifically track and study the hatchlings of endangered sea turtles.
Running till the end of October, the initiative aims to monitor the number of hatchlings emerging from nests, assess their survival rates, and examine the environmental factors influencing their journey to the sea.
The project has been designed to evaluate the effectiveness of existing conservation efforts and contribute to the development of improved strategies for the protection of sea turtles. It also seeks to build the capacity of national professionals in the fields of environmental monitoring and marine biology, while enriching the national database with precise data to support scientific research and policy-making.
In a statement, EA noted that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance the sustainability of the marine environment, safeguard biodiversity and improve indicators of coastal ecosystem health.
The project is aligned with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasises a balance between economic development and the preservation of the sultanate’s rich natural heritage for future generations.
