Salalah – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources will inaugurate two major dams in Salalah this week as part of ongoing efforts to enhance flood protection in Dhofar.

The Wadi Annar Dam, with storage capacity of approximately 16mn cubic metres, will be inaugurated on Sunday. Built at a cost of RO23mn, it forms a key component of the flood protection system in Salalah aimed at mitigating the impact of seasonal flash floods.

The second project – Wadi Adawnib Dam – will be officially opened on Monday. It is the largest dam in Salalah’s flood protection network and the second largest in Oman with storage capacity of 83mn cubic metres. The dam spans 386m in length, 70m high and includes an 80m concrete side spillway. Its watershed area covers 217sqkm. The RO24mn project is designed to reduce the risk of recurring flooding in the area and enhance water security.

Both dams will hold rainwater and floodwaters flowing from the surrounding mountains towards critical economic zones, including Port of Salalah, Raysut Industrial City and Salalah Free Zone.

The ministry noted that the flood protection system in the wilayat of Salalah is designed to support sustainable development, reduce sediment inflow into Port of Salalah and provide long-term resilience against extreme weather events.
